Jane Martin

Jane Martin (1920-1998)

Jane Martin was the WGAWP player of the decade for the 1940’s.  Jane Martin was dubbed the “Golfing Nurse” in many of the news articles of the1940’s and 1950’s.  Jane was the daughter of the Shannopin manager and won that club’s championship at age 15 in 1935.  Jane won the WGAWP Championship in 1947 at Oakmont, in 1949 at Allegheny, and in 1951 at the Pittsburgh Field Club.  She was runner up for the WGAWP Championship four times in 1957, 1958, 1959, and 1963.  Jane won the PA State Championship in 1957 at Pittsburgh Field Club and was runner up to the PA State Championship in 51.  Jane won the Lehman trophy when it was a handicapped match play event in 1947, 1949, and 1950 and the Curley Cup in 1946, 1947, and 1948.  She was recognized by the Press in 1947 for having achieved the grand slam of WGAWP golf as she won all three major tournaments (the Championship, the Lehman, and the Curley) in the same season.
