Betty Abernethy

Betty Abernethy (1911-2005)

Betty Abernethy was the WGAWP Player of the Decade for the 1930’s.  Betty won the WGAWP Championship in 1935 at Westmoreland, the 1937 Championship at Edgewood and the 1938 Championship at Fox Chapel.  She was a finalist in the 1930, 1933, 1949, and 1950 Championships and the Medalist in the Championship qualifying round in the 1929, 1933, and 1935.  Betty won the PA State Championship in 1937 at Berkshire and in 1941 at Oakmont. Betty Abernethy played out of Oakmont until 1950 and was Team Captain when Oakmont won the Team Championship five of six years between 1930 and 1935.  Betty Abernethy qualified for the USGA Women’s Amateur in 1931 and 1949.  I’m addition to her outstanding accomplishments in golf, Betty held numerous volunteer positions in the WGAWP including chairing the Course Rating Committee for 20 years and in recognition of her achievements, the WGAWP named Betty Abernethy an honorary member of the organization in 1992.
