After months of preparation, The Kahkwa Club in Erie will welcome a field of 132 golfers for the USGA Women's Mid-Amateur championship September 10-15.  Saturday and Sunday's stroke play rounds will whittle the field to 64 players who will then move on to match play to finish the tournament and crown a winner on Friday.

The U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship originated in 1987 as a result of a need to provide a national competitive arena for amateurs age 25 and older with a handicap index of no more than 9.4.  It is one of 13 championships conducted by the USGA.  By 1987, it had become increasingly difficult for female amateur golfers beyond college to compete equitably with their collegiate counterparts, for whom golf was nearly a full-time vocation.

This year's field features players ranging in age from 25 to 68, representing 8 countries and 36 states.  Pennsylvania has one of the largest contingents of golfers (8) bested only by California, Texas and Florida.  Of those 8 Keystone State representatives, 4 are members of the Women's Golf Association of Western Pennsylvania!

Katie Miller (Ligonier), Jordan Craig (Westmoreland) and Danielle Proctor (Sewickley Heights) are three of the four qualifiers who earned a spot in the main event through a qualifying tournament in August at Fox Chapel Golf Club; Kristen Obush (Ligonier) is an alternate.  Katrin Wolfe (Windber) punched her ticket at Elyria Country Club (Ohio) after besting the field with a score of 75.

We wish Katie, Katrin, Jordan and Danielle the very best of luck as they compete in this prestigious tournament at one of our beautiful member clubs!

Mid-Am Trivia about this year's field:

     - includes 10 USGA champions and 11 runners-up;
3 players from winning State Team competitions; 4 Curtis Cup
members; 4 players who have played in the World Am and 3
players who competed in the 2004 US Amateur held at Kahkwa
....our own Katrin Wolfe was one of them!
-Katrin will play alongside last year's winner, Lauren Greenlief,
          in Monday's round
-a win for Meghan Bolger Stasi would give her a record 5th Mid-Am
win and become just the 5th woman to win any 5 USGA events
-winning the Mid-Am goes beyond a trophy: a place in the USGA
Hall of Champions, 10 years of Mid-Am exemption and 2 years
           of U.S. Amateur exemption
-Carol Semple Thompson is one of only four players to win multiple
Mid-Am titles, winning in 1990 and 1997 and losing in the finals
           in 19 holes in 1992.
-Semple Thompson is the ONLY player to win the U.S. Amateur and
go on to win a Mid-Amateur title!
