History of the Virginia Frew Wright Award

At the conclusion of each season, the Women's Golf Association of Western Pennsylvania bestows upon its best player the Virginia Frew Wright Player of the Year Award.  Players accumulate points for finishes in the five individual stroke play events: Barnes-Murphy Trophy, Tag Hill Trophy. Spring Two Day, Bobby Cruickshank Memorial Qualifier and the Western Pennsylvania Championship.

The person with the greatest number of points receives the Virginia Frew Wright Player of the Year award and pin. The pin was presented to WGAWP in 1995 by Richard Wright in honor of his mother who was the 4th ranked women's amateur in the United States in the 1920's. The pin is a replica of one that Virginia Frew Wright gave to her maid of honor, Helen Clay Frick in 1909.  A permanent plaque with the winners names will be displayed at Edgewood Country Club.

We are pleased and proud to have past WGAWP president and granddaughter of Ms. Wright, Barbara Russell (whose family continues to provide the funding for this award), to present this most special award to an outstanding female amateur golfers in our organization.  It is expected, once again, to be an exciting and close contest to determine this season's winner.
