WGAWP Junior golf standouts Mia Kness and Caroline Wrigley continue to shine in their young careers as they seek to have their names engraved on the prestigious Robert Cox Trophy as the top female amateur in the country.

The USGA Women's Amateur will be contested at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point MS (the home of Mississippi State's male and female teams), August 5 through 11.  The field of 156 players was selected from 24 qualifying sites where golfers, whose handicap index cannot exceed 5.4, hoped to earn one of the handful of qualifying spots for the event.

Mia Kness, a golf standout at Seton Hall University and the 2018-19 sophomore female Athlete of the Year, punched her ticket to the national event at the Walnut Grove qualifying site in Dayton Ohio, carding a 2-under 70, good enough for a tie for third.

Caroline Wrigley is a recent graduate of North Allegheny who led her high school team to three consecutive state titles and is headed to Furman University in the fall to continue her storied golf career.  She shot an even-par 72 to advance from the Bermuda Run Country Club qualifying site in North Carolina.

The U.S.Women's Amateur has come a long way since Mrs. Charles S. Brown ("whose husband plays at the Shinnecock Hills Club in Southampton L.I.") bested 12 ladies in a single round of 18 hole stroke play to claim the first ever Ladies' championship in 1895.

The current tournament is a grueling seven days of golf.  The field of qualifiers will complete 36 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday hoping to advance to the match play portion and the round of 64 on Wednesday.  Thirty-six holes are played on Thursday, 18 holes on Friday and Saturday and the semifinals and finals bring the tournament to its conclusion on Sunday.

We wish Mia and Caroline the best of luck!!
