Tied for Low Medalist

Katie Miller (Ligonier Country Club) shot a 2-under par 142 to share in a three-way tie for low medalist honors at the 2017 USGA Women's Mid-Amateur and earn the top seed heading into the match play portion of the event.  This year's event was relocated to the Champions Golf Club (Houston) after the original site at Quail Creek (Naples FL) became unplayable following the devastation suffered from Hurricane Irma.

It is only the third time in the history of the event that three or more players were co-medalists. Despite some mid-round birdies on Day Two, Miller, competing in her fourth Mid-Am, needed to do some scrambling late in the round to secure the top seed. After two rounds of stroke play on November 4 and 5, six rounds of match play will conclude on Thursday November 16.  Thursday's 18-hole round will be broadcast on Fox Sports (FS1).  Follow Katie's round with real-time scoring, photos and wrap-ups of the day's competition at www.usga.org

Miller, whose 2016 quarterfinal finish at the MId-Am earned her an exemption from qualifying.   Katrin Wolfe (Windber) and Amy Gierlak (Kahkwa) came through qualification at Connoquenessing Country Club but failed to advance to match play.

A little bit about the history of the Mid-Amateur:

The USGA, answering the need for an arena for women over the age of 25 to compete against their peers (rather than collegiate athletes who treated golf as a full-time job!), the inaugural Mid-Amateur was born in 1987.  It draws upwards of 500 entries every year .

Carol Semple Thompson, a winner in 1990 and 1993, still holds the record for low medalist score (141).  She is the only person to have won the Amateur and the Mid-Amateur in the same season, has advanced to match play 23 times and appeared in the championship round 3 times (a runner-up in 1992)
